In one of the more unusual recruiting stories in memory, Michigan State signee Jay Harris, of Downingtown East, Pa., elected that he no longer will attend MSU this fall.

Instead, he will pursue a rap career under the name “DatBull.”

“I’ve been thinking about doing this for a couple of years now,” Harris said to Philly.com (The Philadelphia Inquirer). “I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do.”

According to the same report, a mixtape is slated for a June 1 release and Harris plans to work with a professional producer this summer.

Harris finished his senior season at Downingtown East with 54 catches for 778 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was a three-star recruit that picked MSU over offers from Temple and Old Dominion. Here is the Welcome Aboard post when Harris committed to the Spartans on June 25, 2012.

The loss of Harris leaves MSU with just one receiver in the 2013 class, Trey Kilgore, but the Spartans brought in four scholarship receivers — and two walk-ons — in the 2012 class. Despite the lack of production and problems with the wide receiver corps last year, it actually is a position of considerable depth.

Now, I am not one to decide whether a life choice someone makes is wise or not, but giving up a full-ride to a Big Ten university to pursue a rap career is a bold move and I would struggle to tell my parents that choice, too.

But, best of luck to Harris in his future endeavors.

Goodluck to my bro Jay with rap, wish he was still coming to MSU though

Here is Harris’ first single on YouTube, “DatBull 4 Life,” which has amassed 50,000 views in less than three weeks. (Warning: Content isn’t exactly … family-oriented.)
